It’s a thrilling start to VIVO IPL 2021, for sure.
I mean, what a match! MI and RCB locked horns for the curtain-raiser at Chepauk, and they provided everything we could ask for – an evenly poised game, lots of drama and a last-ball finish.
For starters, let’s look at some stats – MI have won the last 5 games at Chepauk while RCB has achieved the exact opposite – 5 losses. But, MI have a tradition of slow starters. Also, RCB’s home ground, being Chinnasamy, bears more similarities to Chepauk than Wankhede.
On the other hand, MI has a clear edge over RCB in terms of head-to-head encounters. These stats made for a great reason for both the teams having equal chances to win the match and having an edge over one another in different aspects. So an exciting match was foreseen. And, both teams delivered the excitement, with interest.
MI, batting first, got off to a slow start with Lynn and Rohit opening the batting. Then, Rohit got run out, which was a big blow. Then came SKY – the superstar, who had a partnership with Lynn and steadied things a bit.
But then, he got out, courtesy Kyle Jamieson. Soon after, Sundar got rid of Lynn for 49. Ishan Kishen and Hardik Pandya got starts but they weren’t enough. Harshal Patel was the most impressive of the RCB bowlers, taking a fifer. He was the first bowler to do so against MI. In the end, MI finished with 159 at the end of 20 overs.
RCB, though, gave us all a surprise – Washington Sundar came out to open with the skipper. But, he failed to grab the opportunity and got out cheaply.
Kohli and Maxwell both played cameos, but after they got out, the chase faltered. MI looked in control, but that’s where Mr. 360 – ABD walked in. He scored a brilliant 48 before getting run out in the last over. With one run needed of one ball, Harshal Patel sealed the chase for RCB and was adjudged, MoM.
RCB registered a win at Chepauk (finally!) and MI continued their custom of being slow starters. All in all, it was a perfect start for VIVO IPL 2021.
