Delhi Capitals (DC) bounced back with a victory after beating the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Match 11 of the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.

The second match of Super Sunday was between DC and PBKS. Both teams were itching to bounce back from defeat, and it was KL Rahul’s birthday as well.

The toss was won by DC, and they opted to bowl first. PBKS had a splendid start, with both Rahul and Mayank on the song. Mayank got to a quick 50, and these two had a 100 run partnership.

Then, Lukman  Meriwala got his debut wicket in the form of Agarwal, after being bashed by him in his previous overs. Soon, Rahul got to his 50, a birthday special knock, for sure. He also received a few birthday gifts, in the form of 3 dropped catches.

But he got out soon, his priced wicket being picked by Rabada. Following him to the pavilion was Chris Gayle. Hooda, after a cameo, also got out. The Kings finally scored 195, because of Shahrukh Khan’s last over heroics.

The Capitals got off to a good start, Both Prithvi and Dhawan hitting fabulous shots, right off the middle of the bat. Then, just before the end of the powerplay., Shaw was dismissed. Dhawan and Smith carried on, the scoring rate slightly reduced.

But the pace was picked up once Dhawan got to a well deserved 50. But their partnership came to an end, as Riley Meredith removed Smith for a mere 9 runs. Pant and Dhawan went about their business, till Dhawan was sent back for 92, missing his century by a fraction.

Pant and Stoinis carried on, and the asking rate was 9 and over. Suddenly,  an over by Shami changed the match. He bowled 2 No balls, in the same over, one of which had denied him a wicket. The task was simple enough for DC now. But then, a juggling catch by Hooda saw the back of Pant.

My, what a catch that was! From there, well, nothing much to say – Stoinis got back some form as he hit a four to finish things off. He was 27*, marking his return to form, probably.

Overall, it was an exciting match, turning one-sided only after the 16th over. The orange cap was snatched from Maxwell by Dhawan. It was a disappointing bowling performance by Punjab, and a sad birthday for their skipper, though his 50 would offer him little consolation.

MoM: Shikhar Dhawan

Brief Scores – PBKS 195/4 (Agarwal 69, Rahul 61, Woakes 1/42, Ashwin 0/28)  DC 198/4 (Dhawan 92, Shaw 32, Richardson 2/41, Arshdeep 1/22)
