First Super-Over Finish of VIVO IPL 2021!
Delhi Capitals (DC) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a Super-Over thriller in Match 20 of the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.
It was the second match of the second Blockbuster Sunday of IPL DC vs SRH. One team riding on a high, while the other just having won a match out of all their encounters. It promised to be a thrilling game, just as it turned out to be.
Pant won the toss and opted to bat. Dhawan and Shaw had a good opening partnership, both continuing their good run this season. It looked like it would go on to be like the one in their first game.
But, Dhawan was then dismissed. Shaw got to a 50, though, and then, he got run out, which was a turning point, as it affected the Capitals’ scoring rate and impacted their total score. Smith and Pant carried on, scoring at a steady rate. Pant was the main aggressor, Smith just rotating strike, and doing a very good job at that.
Pant fell in the penultimate over, though, trying to accelerate. Having left Hetmyer and Smith out in the field, Delhi were hoping that they would cross 150. These two took Delhi to a respectable total of 156. It was a par score, and with Bairstow in form, SRH seemed to be going towards their second victory.
In reply, Warner and Bairstow too had a decent start, but Warner got run out, the second time in the league. The previous time it had led to a loss for his team, and this time it was looking as though it was different. Bairstow and Williamson put together a partnership until Bairstow was also dismissed.
Virat Singh and Kedar Jadhav fell in quick succession. Williamson scored a 50, alongside this conundrum. Then, suddenly, Abhishek and Rashid were dismissed – 2 in 2 balls. Sadly, the hat-trick wasn’t achieved by Axar. Vijay Shankar, who usually played the finisher’s role, came and went in a jiffy.
Suchith and Williamson were looking dangerous, but Rabada bowled poor last over, but it wasn’t over yet. They needed 2 runs off one ball, but they managed only one, and – lo and behold! We had the first super over of VIVO IPL 2021!
This was a coincidence, as DC were part of 2020’s first tied match, too. That was against KXIP, and this against SRH. But, unlike then, Axar came to bowl for Delhi. For Hyderabad, Warner and Williamson walked in.
SRH got a boundary, courtesy Williamson, but the rest were just singles, hence managing 7 runs. Time for the Capitals to bat – in come Dhawan and Pant, the lefty combo. Rashid was bowling to them. 8 runs, 6 balls. Pant got a boundary, speeding things up.
Rest were singles, and a run was needed off a ball. A run-out appeal was made, but the batsman was well within his ground, hence giving DC a truly outstanding win.
DC – 159/4; Shaw – 53; Kaul – 2/31
SRH – 159/7; Williamson – 66*; Avesh 3/34
