Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) moved to the top of the points table after they held their nerves to pull off a one-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) in Match 22 of the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.
It was the fight for the first place – the fight to see who would top the table – RCB vs DC. Both had equal points and were placed 3rd and 2nd respectively.
The winner of this encounter would go on top of the table. It was also a battle between the purple cap and orange cap holder – Harshal and Dhawan.
Winning the toss, DC chose to bowl. They had a good start, dismissing Kohli and Padikkal early. Patidar and Maxwell went on, till Maxi was dismissed by Amit Mishra, (to whom he had already been dismissed 4 times out of five).
ABD and Patidar then stitched a partnership of over 50 runs. Patidar then fell, and Sams came in. But after that, it was ABD’s showtime – he smashed 23 runs off the last over by Stoinis. Finally, they got to a decent score of 171.
Before the second innings started, there was a lot of debacle and debate whether to continue the match or not. This was due to a dust storm, a rare occurrence. But it blew over quickly, signalling the start of play.
In the second half of the game, Jamieson took the wicket of Dhawan within the powerplay. Smith was also gone soon, which was an awesome comeback from Siraj after being hit for 12 in his first over.
Stoinis and Pant steadied the innings for the Capitals until Stoinis was sent back to the pavilion. Hetmyer came in, and he and Pant played a very sensible mature innings. They got to a 50 partnership, as well as their own 50s.
It all boiled down to the last over, 14 needed off it. Cut to the last ball – 6 needed. Pant could only manage four, handing RCB a close victory by 1 run.
With this, RCB go to the top of the table, and they came back to winning ways. The purple cap Harshal took 2 wickets, while Dhawan could score only 6. So, that battle was won by Harshal.
RCB – 171 – 5; AB de Villiers – 75*; Avesh – 1/24
DC – 170/4; Pant – 58*; Harshal – 2/37
MoM: AB de Villiers; for a scintillating knock of 75, and, if not for his innings, RCB could not have managed to reach 170.
