Life and art are converging for the Stranger Things actor Noah Schnapp, who came out as gay six months after revealing the sexuality of his character Will.
“I suppose I’m more like Will than I thought,” he captioned a TikTok video published on Thursday, which read: “When I finally informed my friends and family I was homosexual after being afraid in the closet for 18 years, all they said was ‘we know’.
” Schnapp was lip-syncing to an audio recording of a person stating, “You know what it was never? That severe. Never was it so severe. Sincerely, that will never be the case.”
During the summer, Schnapp, who is presently a business student at the University of Pennsylvania, addressed his character’s sexuality for the first time.

It was always there, but you never knew for sure; is he maturing more slowly than his peers? Schnapp told Variety that Will lacks a romantic plotline. “Now that he’s older, they’ve made it extremely real and evident.
Now it is completely evident that he is homosexual and that he loves Mike [his best buddy, portrayed by Finn Wolfhard].
But previously, it was a gradual arc. Because it’s so simple to turn a character suddenly queer, I believe it’s done really well.
Prior to the fourth season of Stranger Things, Schnapp evaded queries concerning Will’s sexual orientation, stating that it was “up to the audience’s interpretation.”
The actor revealed that this was all part of a plan to conceal the eventual revelation of the Netflix program. This season has made it quite evident that Will has emotions for Mike.
Over the past several seasons, they’ve made a concerted effort to expose this,” he told Variety. Even in the first season, they hinted at this and gradually developed the plot.
I believe that for season four, I was the only actor portraying this character who loves his best buddy but suffers from knowing if he would be welcomed, feeling like a mistake, and not belonging. Will has always had this sentiment.”
In the next final season of Stranger Things, creators of the Duffer brothers will “focus more on Will,” and Schnapp is hoping for a “coming-out sequence” for his character.
